Margret Wibmer and Anna Baumgart both work at the interface of art and fashion and share an interest in participatory performances in which the audience is directly involved in the realization of the work. Both artists investigate in different ways the relationship between the body and social and architectural space. Baumgart, who studied fashion design at Central Saint Martin College of Art and Design in London, choses to work with the possibilities of film and performance. For her, referencing Maurice Merlau-Ponty, clothing is inseparable from the body. She uses it to define social as well as individual identities. In her work it is the dressed body that locates the human being in space. Margret Wibmer, on the other hand, initially considers clothing and body independently of each other in order to give both clothing and body autonomy. She pays attention to the materiality of the fabric and ascribes personal traits to each individual body. Critiquing industrial clothing production and the resulting standardization of bodies she explores the construction of identity not defined by clothing but by the personality of the wearer. Wibmer’s preferred media are photography, objects and performance. Both positions open up a discourse in a jointly conceived exhibition that engages with the gallery’s space and raises questions about standardization, hierarchy, and autonomy in the deconstruction of fashion. Mit der in Osttirol geborenen und seit Jahren in Amsterdam lebenden Margret Wibmer und der jungen Britin Anna Baumgart stellen zwei Künstlerinnen gemeinsam aus, die beide an der Schnittstelle von Kunst und Mode arbeiten. Es verbindet sie dazu auch das Interesse am Performativen, an partizipatorischen Performances in denen das Publikum zum Akteur wird und direkt an der Realisierung der Arbeit beteiligt ist. Anna Baumgart und Margret Wibmer untersuchen auf unterschiedliche Weise die Beziehung von Körper und gesellschaftlichen wie architektonischem Raum. Kleidung wird darin die auf ihre Ästhetik und Funktionalität zu prüfende Schnittstelle. Baumgart, ausgebildet am Central Saint Martin College für Art and Design in London kommt vom Modedesign und arbeitet bevorzugt mit den Möglichkeiten von Film und Performance. Im Sinne von Maurice Merlau-Ponty ist für sie Kleidung untrennbar mit dem Körper verbunden und formuliert mit ihm soziale wie individuelle Identitäten. Es ist der gekleidete Körper, der den Menschen im Raum verortet. Margret Wibmer betrachtet dagegen Kleidung und Körper zunächst unabhängig voneinander, um beiden, der Kleidung wie dem Körper Autonomie zu geben. Einerseits schenkt sie dem Material der Stoffe Aufmerksamkeit, wie sie andererseits dem Körper eine eigene Persönlichkeit zuschreibt. Identität definiert sich in ihren Überlegungen also nicht über die Kleidung sondern über die Persönlichkeit des Menschen. Sie bezieht sich dabei auf industrielle Kleidungsproduktion und die daraus resultierende Standardisierung von Körpern. Wibmers bevorzugte Medien sind Fotografie, Objekte und Performance.
Beide Positionen werden in einer gemeinsam konzipierten und sich auf die Räumlichkeiten der Galerie einlassenden Ausstellung einen Diskurs eröffnen, der in der Dekonstruktion von Mode Fragen nach Standardisierung, Hierarchie und Autonomie aufwirft.
