ART FOR IMPACT

The course

The course consists of four sessions of two hours each. In each session, Margret Wibmer introduces the work of a selected artist, a particular topic, approach or medium through interviews, project documentation, and other visual material shared on screen. 

This provides a starting point for conversation and exchange, as well as time to explore the questions and ideas that emerge from the work and from the participants’ own perspectives. During the final session, Margret will introduce one of her own long-term participative projects and offer rare behind the scenes encounters with the work. 

Rather than trying to cover many artists or themes in a single session, each meeting takes time to engage with one artistic practice and the questions it raises. The direction of the conversation is shaped partly by the participants and their responses to the work.

Artists and artistic practices

Artists whose work will be introduced include Amanda Heng, Ibrahim Mahama, Dawoud Bey, Carolina Caycedo, Tania Bruguera, John Halpern & Emily Harris, and Margret Wibmer.

The artists work across different media and approaches and engage with questions relevant to socially engaged art – including relationships between people, communities, bodies, materials, places, and the environment.

The selection of artists may develop in response to the interests and questions of the group, with additional artists introduced where their work offers a meaningful connection to the conversations that emerge during the course.

The different ways artists use media, materials, processes, and participation to engage with social and environmental questions.

How conversation, curiosity, and the sharing of different perspectives can open up new ways of approaching contemporary art.
